Getting to grips with good coffee is kind of like dipping your toe into the world of fine wines; there’s a lot to learn and it can feel pretty overwhelming when you’re a newbie. But, once you take that first sip of a really good quality blend, there’s no going back.
At Need Beans, we believe everyone should have access to high-quality coffee. We want to help you cut through the jargon and marketing to find proper blends for your morning cuppa.
That’s why we’ve put together this handy guide, looking at how exactly you can find the right coffee for your taste buds. Let’s get into it!
Get to Know Your Coffee Beans
Our Need Beans coffee blends come in a whole range of flavour profiles and roasts, but the entire breadth of beans can be broken down into two main categories:
- Arabica
- Robusta
Arabica is the sweeter of the two, with a slightly more mellow, delicate flavour. It’s a good everyday choice for those just getting into coffee beans.
Robusta packs more of a punch, with a sharper, bitter taste that many coffee lovers enjoy. For a coffee that’s really going to wake you up with a bang, give it a go!
It’s also good to note that climate, altitude, and even soil can affect the taste of your coffee. Beans that are grown higher up tend to be sweeter, for example, because of the slower growth of the plants.
Is Single Origin Coffee Better?
Whether you prefer single-origin blends or beans from multiple locations is entirely up to you. Neither is better or a sign of superior quality, so let your taste buds guide your choice.
At Need Beans, we mix together beans from different locations in our Breakfast Need Beans Blend, which contains a 55/44 split between Ugandan and Brazilian beans for a complex, distinctive flavour profile. We also have single-origin coffee blends, like our Session Need Beans blend, which is entirely made up of beans grown in Brazil.
Both are delicious (in our humble opinion as Need Beans fans) and made from equally high-quality beans, so there’s no right or wrong answer. It’s all down to personal preference.
What’s Your Preferred Flavour Profile?
What sort of flavours do you enjoy in a fresh brew? Knowing more about whether you’re into sweet and chocolatey or rich and nutty will make choosing good coffee beans a whole lot easier.
You can work out more about your flavour preferences by simply smelling different types of coffee. The aroma of the beans will tell you a lot about the final taste. We’d also recommend tasting different flavour profiles and being open to new roasts, brewing styles, and beans, learning what you do and don’t like to choose the best coffee for your kitchen.
